International singing competition of Italian Opera
history
The competition traces its history back to 1996, when Professor Hermann Rauhe, then president of the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, founded the "I Cestelli" Opera Competition. Hans-Joachim Frey became its director. Starting in 2001, the competition was held in Dresden.
In 2011, it expanded beyond Germany for the first time. Russia became the first foreign host country, with its New Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre serving as the inaugural venue. Over the years, the competition has discovered and launched the careers of many stars on the global opera scene.The jury members include renowned opera agents, directors, singers, casting directors, and theater managers.
For 29 years, it has been held annually on the world’s most prestigious opera and concert stages, including: Semperoper Dresden (Germany), Bremen State Theatre (Germany), Hamburg State Opera (Germany), Brucknerhaus Linz (Austria), Bolshoi Theatre of Russia (Moscow), Bolshoi Theatre of Uzbekistan (Tashkent), Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus (Minsk) and others.
In 2025, the competition returns to Russia - Its semi-finals and finals will be held on December 19 and 21 in Moscow at the Zaryadye Concert Hall
